Hi guys! We have been receiving a bunch of messages asking about workouts; what a typical workout looks like, training for a 10K, how many times we workout etc. I wanted to answer some questions and share some of my tips for those goals!
I just signed up for a 10K [5k, half] where do I begin?
As most of you know I just finished a 10K here in VA a few weeks ago and Kate, Grace and I just signed up to run the Disney 10K in February. It’s never too early to start training! If this is your first time running long distance take it week by week. Start with 2-2.5 miles your 1st week, then build up over the next few weeks to 3-3.5 miles etc. I was stuck on 4 miles for around 2 weeks until I felt comfortable to move to 5 miles. Make sure to stay consistent, don’t skip out on weeks. Even if you have only 15 minutes it’s better than nothing.
Right now my focus is continuing my workouts around 4-6 miles and adding in abs & arms and building that strength before the next race. We’ll be sharing more weekly workout schedules closer to the race.
How many days a week do you workout?
Typically I try to workout Mon-Fri or 4 days a week. Usually I’ll take the weekend off to recover. I’ve been going to the gym lately for training, but I will also mix outside workouts. The natural hills, heat and air quality etc. helps for training!
Everyday workouts
Start with cardio and end with arms & abs.
- RUN 4 miles – speed 7 and increase to 7.2-7.4
- 50 Russian twists, 20 suitcases, 15 push ups, 15 tricep dips REPEAT 3x
- OR I mix in a 5-6 min plank [changing sides]
How do you find motivation?
Kate and I played lacrosse in college and all throughout of lives. We were mainly sprinters and long distance wasn’t our thing. Getting to two miles was painful! After we graduated we took a little time off and slowly started to get back to running. We truly learned to love it again. Signing up for the Disney run was also very motivating and SO much fun! Having a goal to work towards is key. I run for my mental health too, after a long day at work it feels good to clear my head. Also, I love the feeling after. It’s the best feeling of accomplishment + it makes cookies and ice cream taste so much better too ๐ (we have ice cream almost every night!)
Look for 10Ks or halfs in your area. I literally googled 10Ks near me and I found this Virginia Wine Country Run, which was SO much fun and had a winery tastings and a live music festival at the end!
What headphones do you wear & do you recommend them?
I wear these BOSE wireless headphones. I LOVE them and made Kate get the same ones! Matt got them for me because he has had the same ones for a few years now. Seriously it has made a huge difference in running and working out for me! No more cord getting in the way. Also, I love how there is a small wire and it has a little clip you can attach to your shirt collar. I also love that I can hang them around my neck too.
