Between the 3 of us there have been lots of flights by ourselves with the babies. We all love the travel to see each other and the rest of our family and often times our husbands canโt come. Before flying by myself for the first time Kate & Grace gave me a bunch of tips. From what I wore to the way I packed, everything made a difference.
Sharing some tips I got from my sisters below:
- Belt bagย – easy access to your phone & wallet
- Diaper bag backpack – this one I use has insulated pockets for milk storage!
- Open shirt jacket/ layers – you never know whether the plane is going to be hot or cold having an open shirt is easy to take on and off with the carrier. I even cover his face when passing by people
- Baby Carrier
- Nursing tank – Kate told me this! When nursing on the plane it gives you more coverage
- Binky pouch (love this mickey one), clip, binky wipes
- Easy on & off shoes like these flyknits, on cloud (I need to get TSA approved!)
- Be confident & stay calm – I had a sense of calm when traveling this last time with Charlie (I think once the first flight alone is done you know what to expect) but even if he did cry I just tried to remain calm and just focused on what he needed
- Get a window seat if you are nursing — don’t be afraid to ask if there are extra seats
Things I learned from this last flight:ย
- have easy access/ remember where you put things in your diaper bag – I know this goes without saying but being able to find the binky wipes during flight is essential lol
- I pumped a bottle before hand & it helped relieve some stress in case he wanted to eat before boarding or got fussy. Right as we sat down he was ready to eat. Once the bottle was done, I nursed him for a little as we took off
- Insulated pocket in diaper bagย
- Bring AirPods (on sale!)
- DON’T FORGET YOU CHECKED A BAG lol I went all the way home and 2 hours later remembered that I never grabbed it
Things I learned the past 3 months:
- Make a list of things to accomplish in the morning/ afternoon/ night
- Small tasks matter (small wins)
- Start a routine earlier than you think. I was just going about the motions until I saw the routine Kate had i.e. wake ups, nap time, walks. It makes a difference! TakingCaraBabies has so many. courses that are so helpful from newborns on!
- Get outside – Charlie loves being outside! Even if he gets fussy for a nap the second we go outside he’s out
- Clear your head; going for a run makes a huge difference on my mood when I’m overwhelmed or tired
- This exersaucer – you use it sooner than you think! So happy it was all ready to go for Charlie. Once day he was just looking at the toys, the next he was playing and reaching for them! I’m so lucky my sisters & mom always help guide me for what’s next/ what I can start doing.
- This chair – Charlie always give me a big smile in here
- Soft toys – Charlie loves this octopus my friend got us – Hudson was obsessed too lol. Sophie La Girafe!
- Have extra sleep sacks (transitioning to a warmer one soon)/ crib sheets
