So as many of you can see from Instagram I (Kate) recently moved to Austin as of this past October for the hockey season! My bf plays for the Dallas Stars organization so for the past 6 months we have been in both ATX & Dallas! We are seriously loving Texas and can’t wait to spend the next two hockey seasons back here! I’m still so new to the area so I barely touched on Austin and I know I’m missing a lot! Lol But a bunch of you requested an Austin travel guide so I wanted to share some of my favorite spots from my time here!
Brunch, Lunch, Dinner
- Geraldine’s- one of the best places for brunch!
- Moonshine- our friends introduced us to this southern style buffet brunch! Totally worth the wait. I’m still dreaming of the chicken & waffles.
- Walton’s Fancy & Staple- you walk up order & seat yourself. The vibe and food is amazing! The huge cookies are even better!
- Eberly- dying to try! I’ve heard such amazing things!
- Odd Duck
- Mattie’s- our friends recommended this & it is so cool! Obsessed with the huge farmers porch & the homey old mansion vibes.
- True Foods & Flower Child- both located in The Domain are two of our favorite healthy spots. True Foods changes their menu seasonally too!
Shopping
South Congress – such a fun area to walk around, shop, grab a drink/bite and catch live music pretty much anywhere! There are so many cute little quirky/ true Austin shops as well as stores like Kendra Scotts Flagship store! Also, so many restaurants (dying to try Pearla’s), coffee shops & picture spots! Like the “I Love You So Much” mural on the side of Jo’s Coffee.
W 6th Street area (also Downtown Austin)- Be sure to stock up on some major workout gear by checking out the coolest Lululemon & Outdoor Voices! I’ve been dying to see the Outdoor Voices store, I hear it’s amazing, this is where they started in Austin!
The Domain– about 15 minutes from downtown Austin, the Domain is one of my favorite shopping spots! I spent majority of my time here because it’s so nice all the shops are close to one another and outside! The best Nordstrom ever and everything from Madewell & Zara to Louis Vuitton and Stuart Weitzman. Plus there are amazing restaurants (like Doc B’s, my fav casual eating place) and places to grab a coffee or drink! It was seriously a dream living here and being able to wake up and walk to coffee less than a half a mile away.
Bar/ Going out scene
Rainey Street
Located right downtown and one of our favorite spots for a Sunday Funday. Rainey Street is a full street with all different types of bars and most of them are old house that are transformed into bars! Definitely don’t miss out on some of these spots- Bangers for the largest mimosa ever, having a drink in a storage container at the Container Bar and sliding down a slide in the middle of the bar at Unbarlievable.
6th street
One of our favorite weekend night time time spots! The street closes on 6th as on either side of the street will be soo many different bars with live music and unforgettable moments. Pete’s Dueling Piano is unreal- the musician’s and singers take requests for some of the best cover music you’ll ever hear!
Other Fun Activities
Head an 1.5 hours north to visit the famous Magnolia Silos home of Chip & Joanna in Waco, TX! Such a nice day trip to hang out, eat at the restaurant or food trucks & shop around! I’m still dreaming of the cupcakes & amazing decor. I went a few times this year, Anne too when she came!
- Wineries: Fredricksburg, TX has some of the best wineries around (located about 1.5 hours from Austin) I was dying to go here! Also, check out Driftwood TX (only 30 min from Austin) for a huge list of wineries such as Duchman Family Winery, Fall Creek,
- Breweries to try: Zilker Brewering co, Celis Brewery, Austin Beerworks, Austin Beer Garden Brewering Co Eastciders (Cider brewery!)
- Scooters- You have to try these you will see them everywhere! Don’t be scared if you’ve never been on one, the cars seem to watch out for people on these!
- Lady Bird Lake- right in the middle of downtown Austin! So nice for walking/running and taking in the scenery.
- Barton Springs outdoor swimming pool
- Lake Travis- around 35 minutes from downtown- be sure to stop in at Oasis Brewery.
I know I just touched on the amazing things Austin has to offer, but bottom line is Austin is such an amazing place and no matter what if you have the chance to visit you will have a blast! Be sure to reach out and let me know your favorite spots!
